Making an all around good character is possible, but more people make multiple characters for different jobs. The endgame instead is about crafting a highly specific character aiming for certain items to perform certain tasks. There is no just stack one attribute your class needs like intelligence on mage sort of thing, there is no gear score, no rifts or repeatable content that scales forever. Your character in diablo2 is entirely based around these finite limits making you choose what to spec and what gear to grind for. However these stats do not work the way they do in d3. You also get 5 attribute points each level to put towards strength, dexterity, vitality and energy. In diablo 2 your level is statically capped at a really tough to reach 99 and you get a skillpoint to spend in the skill tree each level and some extras as quest rewards for a total of 110 skill points. The endgame of diablo2 mainly consists of running the story stuff you've already beaten over and over to farm certain very good items you need for your build.
